Hiiii, I'm Adele, and I am rooting for you babe -
Today, you meet me as an award‑winning actress, best known for playing Cleopatra in Jada Pinkett‑Smith’s Queen Cleopatra on Netflix, leading roles at the National Theatre and in the West End.
But if I take you back to 2015...
I had just finished my Drama Degree from the University of Bristol and was diving headfirst into the industry as a Black-biracial, working-class Londoner, raised by a single mum (my hero!), who had zero contacts in the industry and never went to Drama School.
It feels quite miraculous to be where I am today, though my journey has not been short of challenges:
😬 financial hardship
🥲 two 10-month work gaps in 3 years
😟 more rejections than I can count
😖 getting dropped by my agent of 5 years
😰 burning out a few times...
The truth is, I struggled and hustled way more than was necessary. Why? Well, quite simply - I was overcompensating. Big time. I believed that because I hadn't gone to drama school like my peers did, that I was always 5 steps behind everyone else. So I worked 10x harder than everyone else. But, of course, I was playing a losing game because attacking my career like that impacted my mental health, my physical health, my sense of self-worth and my relationships with others too. Not to mention that any success I did have as an actor was hard to fulfil to my best ability and harder to receive meaningfully. That's when I started looking for another way to build my career... There had to be another way... ...or else I'd have to quit.
